Ordinary securely packaged, shelf-stable chocolate can generally accompany you to Greece for personal consumption. For non-EU arrivals, the EU exemption is conditional; it does not automatically cover chilled desserts or every mixed gift box. EU passenger-food exemption, Annex III.
The next practical question is what happens at Athens Airport: where to resolve an uncertain food, whether to collect your suitcase during a connection, and how to pack spreads for the flight home. These airport procedures were checked on 26 September 2026.
Settle unusual ingredients before flying
The exemption depends on the finished product and the applicable composite-food conditions, including packaging, shelf stability and animal ingredients. For an unfamiliar confection, use the Greek Customs contact link on AIA's Customs and Tax refund page, immediately above the Tax Refund Procedure section. That page identifies Customs as the authority checking both goods compliance and taxes.
Send the ingredient and storage-label photographs, manufacturing country, quantity, departure country and full itinerary. Ask whether the product may enter in personal baggage and whether any document or declaration is required. For example, specify a refrigerated cream-filled gift rather than asking whether “chocolate” is allowed.
Keep the reply with the exact product details. A response about ordinary bars cannot resolve a substituted chilled dessert. If uncertainty remains on arrival, seek Customs assistance before leaving the controlled arrivals area; an airport shopping receipt is not an import approval.
Connecting to a Greek island: check the bag, not just the ticket
AIA warns that passengers continuing to regional Greek airports may need to collect baggage and clear Customs at Athens even when the tag shows the final destination. Confirm this with your airline. AIA connecting-flight instructions.
For a London–Athens–Chania journey, ask at the first check-in: “Must I collect this suitcase for Customs in Athens?” Photograph the baggage tag and keep food documents with you, rather than inside the suitcase whose route you are trying to establish.
If a bag is not checked through, AIA directs you to baggage reclaim on Level 0, then Customs, then the check-in hall on Departures Level 1. Its minimum connection times do not cover self-arranged connections or journeys requiring baggage collection. AIA baggage and connection guidance.
Allow time for that sequence before planning an airport meal or shopping stop. A short connection is a reason to resolve the baggage instructions early, not to postpone a food question until the island.
Flying home from Athens: a bar and a spread need different packing
For ordinary cabin liquids, AIA publishes a 100 mL maximum container size, with containers fitting inside one transparent, resealable 1-litre bag per passenger. Athens security rules.
Treat a chocolate spread as a liquid or paste for packing purposes and check any uncertain consistency with security. A jar labelled with a 250 mL capacity will not fit that ordinary container rule merely because it is half empty. Choose a smaller container or arrange appropriate checked baggage before bag drop, subject to carrier acceptance and destination food rules.
Do not plan around whatever your UK departure airport allowed on the outward flight. Athens publishes its own checkpoint instructions. Keep the liquid bag accessible; avoid wrapping a spread inside an elaborate gift that you would have to dismantle at screening.
Buying a liquid gift after security
AIA says duty-free liquids must remain with the original receipt in their security tamper-evident bag until the final destination and are subject to screening. A normal retail carrier bag is not that security bag. AIA duty-free liquid conditions.
Before paying for a large jar, tell the shop about every onward airport. Keep the bag sealed and use our duty-free connection guide for the next checkpoint's separate requirements. Buying after one security check does not settle another airport's acceptance.
