Duty-free liquids can sometimes stay in your carry-on through a connection, but the shopping receipt alone is not enough. Acceptance depends on the transfer checkpoint, the security bag, the purchase timing where relevant, and successful screening. Check the connection before paying for a bottle you cannot otherwise transport.
A sealed duty-free purchase also remains subject to destination customs rules. Security permission and a tax allowance answer different questions. This guide uses official UK, EU and Canadian examples checked on 24 September 2026.
Draw the journey before choosing the purchase
Write down each airport in travel order, including any overnight stop and separate-ticket connection. Next to each, ask whether you will pass security again and whether you will have access to checked baggage before that happens.
Do not infer the answer simply from “connecting flight” on the booking. Ask the airport or airline about your actual transfer: terminals, baggage collection and whether the connection requires leaving the secure area.
This preparation gives you a buying decision. If you cannot establish acceptance at a later checkpoint and will not be able to check the bottle, consider buying after the last relevant security check or at the destination.
Ask for a security bag at the till
An ordinary shopping bag or a resealable kitchen bag is not the same thing as the retailer's security tamper-evident bag. Explain that you have connecting flights before the retailer packs the purchase.
Under the UK guidance, airport or onboard purchases can pass security with the goods sealed in a security bag and the receipt sealed inside and visible. Leave it unopened until the final destination; officers may open it for screening. GOV.UK duty-free liquid conditions
Before walking away from the till, check that the receipt is present and the seal is intact. Keep a separate photograph for your records if useful, but do not assume a photograph replaces the required receipt inside the bag.
Avoid opening the purchase during the first flight to try a fragrance or separate gifts. The packaging is part of the screening process, not just a convenient way to carry the bottle.
EU connections: keep the goods and receipt together
The EU's passenger guidance allows duty-free liquids purchased from an airport or airline when the item and receipt remain in the security bag supplied at purchase. For example, imagine buying perfume before a flight that connects at an EU airport. Before purchase, establish the transfer screening arrangement. At screening, present the purchase as requested and mention the onward flight before leaving the inspection point if the bag has been opened.
That is a packing workflow, not a guarantee that every product will clear screening. Leave time for inspection and avoid a purchase that would create a serious problem if it could not continue.
Canadian screening: purchase timing also matters
CATSA accepts qualifying duty-free liquids from airport or airline retailers, subject to screening, in official security bags with an itemised receipt. Its guidance identifies opened or incorrectly packed bags, failed screening and purchases more than 48 hours old as reasons goods may be surrendered. For a Canadian connection, write down the purchase time as well as the flight time. An overnight delay can change your situation even though you have kept the seal intact. Recheck with CATSA when the timing is close rather than treating the bag as indefinitely valid.
CATSA also warns that another country's checkpoint may intercept the goods. Canadian acceptance therefore should not be extended to a later connection elsewhere.
Work through an overnight-transfer example
Suppose you want to buy a 750 ml bottle before a journey with an overnight stop. Your checklist should answer:
- Will there be another security checkpoint after the hotel stay?
- Does that checkpoint accept this retailer's security packaging?
- Is there a purchase-age condition?
- Can you access and recheck a suitcase before screening if necessary?
- Does the operating airline accept the product and its quantity?
- Does the destination allow you to import it on the intended terms?
If one answer remains unknown, the useful next step is a route-specific check, not buying a second plastic bag. A security bag cannot solve a missing baggage option or a customs restriction.
Customs still counts the purchase
UK personal-allowance rules explicitly cover overseas purchases from duty-free shops. The applicable allowance depends on the journey and whether you arrive in Great Britain or Northern Ireland; restricted goods and goods over allowances require declaration. GOV.UK personal-use imports
Keep a separate record of value and quantity for customs. You might pass airport screening with a sealed bottle and still need to declare it on arrival. Conversely, a purchase within a customs allowance may still fail security screening.

If the purchase cannot continue

Can I reseal a bag myself?
Do not treat a home-made repair as restoring official security packaging. Keep the original seal intact and ask screening staff about resealing after an inspection. If you have already opened the bag, reassess the remaining journey before attempting another checkpoint.
